QuestionHello Dan,
Many thanks in advance for your help with my question. I am a 25-year-old male from Shanghai, China. I have been exercising for over a year and am now at about 67 kg (169 cm in height). Estimated body fat is a bit below 20% (I have not tested it for quite a few weeks). I am trying my best to stay with 5 meals a day. Recently, I read a report by WHO that canned food is among the 10 worst food, which causes me uneasiness because for 2 of the meals daily I rely on canned tuna fish meat for protein intake. It's very difficult to prepare quality meal during office hours and I find canned tuna fish meat a convenient choice.
I can't help asking whether canned tuna fish is really that bad? If so, what alternative can I take? (I used to take whey protein powder in the meal; however, the cost of having protein powder in 2 or more meals a day is too high and I would feel hungry again after an hour or so, long before my next meal).
I would appreciate your answer.
Best regards
Erik
AnswerHi Erik,
Great question. You should limit the amount of canned food you eat, mainly due to the higher sodium content of many canned foods. Canned veggies are at the bottom of the nutrient chain. Canned fruits are almost always packed in syrup and sugar. The main concern about tuna is the type, albacore tuna is a smaller open water tuna and may have less of a risk of mercury and other heavy metal contamination.
You can certainly eat canned fish. Simply reduce how often you eat it; try making fresh fish ahead of time and reheating at work. Two cans a day is probably too much.
Good luck,
