Questioni wanted to ask about my 2 year old son, who eats well. he
loves everything including spinach, lima beans, and brussel sprouts.
i have two inquires...1] what foods are high in calcium. he broccoli, cheese, cottage cheese, and yogurt. but i was wondering about others as i am not giving him milk. i still
breastfeed. but he is cutting back on that lately; and 2] as i am never sure of what a portion is, and i would like to know how much he should get at each meal or a day of each food.
thank you in advance for your time and energy in answering my queries.
AnswerHi Danielle,
Congratulations on your healthy-eating baby! I wouldn't be worried a lot about servings and calcium because breast milk guarantees healthy hunger so your son gets all he needs with food and breast milk and don't overeat. Trust his appetite!
Also, breast milk insures a proper combination of nutrients (carb to protein to fat) so his body is comfortable with his nutrition.
Long ago, Dr Benjamin Spock, an American pediatrician whose book Baby and Child Care (1946) is one of the biggest best-sellers of all time, wrote about an experiment: babies were allowed to eat all they wanted from a broad choice of different foods. They were choosing wise, were healthier and better developed than their fellows fed by rules and recommendations.
However, it'd be good if you could talk about these problems with your doctor.
