QUESTION: i am 16 years old. male. and i am about 5 foot 11, and weight around 225. i have my senior class trip coming around mid may. i would like to weight about 180-190. what is the best way for me to lose weight. i eat a lot of salads, banana's, and apples. i rarely drink coke( less than once per week) i usually drink HI-C or water, and i do a lot of running and riding my bike and weight lifting? how do lose more weight before mid may. -MARCH 23, 2008

ANSWER: Hi Mike, You have only given yourself about 6-7 weeks to lose weight.
You can probably get down to about 205 if you exercise a lot. When I say a lot, I mean at least one hour of exercise per day, everyday. Second is your diet. Cut out sugar in all forms. Hi-C,juices and cola are sugar, cut those out. Try to eat around 1800 calories per day. Strive to eat healthy foods like lean meats, chicken, fish, tuna fish, whole fruits (no more than three per day),vegetables, whole grain pasta or bread (only two to three servings per day)healthy fats like those found in salad oils, and low fat dairy. Try to split those 1800 calories into 5 small meals averaging about 350 calories each. So every three hours or so try eat a small healthy meal averaging about 300-400 calories. Eating this way, will allow your body to burn fat for energy. Weight lifting is a great addition to your exercise regime, so try to lift weights at least three times per week and target all body parts, especially the larger muscle groups. QUESTION: what are some good examples of whole fruits and whole grains.  It wouldn't hurt me to workout a full hour and also go to the gym and lift weights would it. Should i cut things like ramen noodles and lean pockets out of my diet as well.

Dear Mike, Any apple or orange is a good choice, also just get bread that says "whole grain", if you can afford the low carb brand, that would help you lose weight quicker. Ramen noodles are pure pasta and should not be eaten. One package of regular ramen noodles has usually two and one half servings. Most people eat the entire package. Those types of carbs are easily stored as fat when eaten in excess.
You can have a lean pocket, choose the ones with meat in them and stick with your 300-400 calorie meal. A better and cheaper choice would be real broiled chicken breast, pork chop, or lean meat, add vegetables as a filler. Hope that helps, Laura Kraemer,Slimkids.com
