QuestionHello,
My coach have recommended me to take Accelerade, a sports drink with 4:1 carb:protein ratio, around the times of my workouts to promote muscle recovery.
I'm wondering if I should take the ingredients literally. For example, if it has 'whey protein concentrate' and sucrose as ingredients. Is it the same if I take whey protein concentrate powder and mix it with sugar?
In other words, is it safe to mix your own sports drinks?
By the way I don't really mind them tasting bad. Performance matters more.
Thank you for helping! Have a nice spring.

AnswerHello Yang!
Preparing your own sports drink can be better then store bought because you know exactly what it contains. Whey protein is recommended 30 minutes after a workout to help with muscle recovery. Sucrose is another name for sugar and should be limited. You might consider the following recipe:
3/4 cup cold water, with crushed ice added to equal 1 cup.
--OR--
1 cup lowfat milk (adds 100 calories and 12 carbs)
1 scoop whey powder (Choose Vanilla, Chocolate or Strawberry.)
1 rounded teaspoon Psyllium Powder *optional
1-3 teaspoons Ground Flaxseed **optional
Mix well in your blender or hand blender. Enjoy! Add blueberries, strawberries or peaches to vanilla whey pqwder to make a refreshing fruit smoothie!
Note: If you are mixing it with water to avoid the carbs, try adding 1 teaspoon (or more to taste) of whipping cream...it makes it taste creamier. This will add 0 carbs and 15 calories
