Carbs and Sugars and Fibre

Question
Per 100g if a flapjack states carbs as 20g of which sugars 28.3g and fibre @ 5.5g do I a)take 20-5.5 and get  14.5g per flapjack or do I b)take 20g+28.3=48g then minus the 5.5=42.5 per flapjack PLEASE HELP?Emma

Answer
Sugar is included in the carbohydrate amount.  If you are counting carbs, then you only look at the "total carbohydrate" amount.  If fiber is more than 5g, then you can subtract that from the carb amount.  I work with many diabetics (they need to limit carbs) and this is what I teach them.  I usually tell them to not even look at sugar, just the carb amount because sugar is a carb!

Ignore the percentages - that usually helps!
