QuestionHi -
I'm at the beginning of a self-test for reducing sugar intake
because I've noticed I tend to crave sugary foods at the end of a day of eating such foods between meals. The most noticeable problem is late at night - I wake up with these sugar cravings and almost in a dreamlike state, I eat a large amount of cookies or other food before I can go to sleep again. In just two days of reducing sugar intake, I've noticed an improvement in demeanor and energy level.
Are these changes a pointer to an intolerance to sugar or some other condition? Thanks for your time and attention.
AnswerJon,
That is a great question.
You know, most of us have trouble with sugar cravings. People like me, with hyperglycemia, really need to watch our sugar intake and in what form the sugar is in.
I definitely understand the cravings. Also, the fact that you have noticed a change in demeanor and energy level (I assume for the better) means that you have identified an imbalance in your diet.
I'm not saying cut out sugar altogether, but white, processed sugar has to go. You can look for natural sweeteners such as stevia and agave nectar if you want to sweeten up something or use it for baking.
Otherwise, your body won't miss the processed sugar so much anymore not that you have been reducing your intake.
This doesn't mean you have an intolerance or another condition, necessarily. However, if you have been experiencing the symptoms of type 1 or type 2 diabetes, you will want to see your doctor as soon as possible in order to rule that out and/or rule out glucose impairment (meaning your body isn't processing glucose as it should be).
Hop on the website for the American Diabetes Association (diabetes.org) and you will find a list of symptoms to guide you.
Other than that, congratulations on taking charge of what goes into your body.
You're doing a great job.
I hope this helps.
