QuestionMy doctor wants me to lower my cholesterol. Could you tell me with mushrooms, particularly portabello mushrooms, are low in cholesterol.
Thank you
Linda
AnswerHi, Linda
The thing about mushrooms, and vegetables in general, is that they have no cholesterol. Be sure to avoid cooking them without adding butter or other fats. Extra virgin olive oil is okay, but try not to use too much of that.
The more vegetables and fruit you include in your diet, generally the lower you cholesterol will be because you are consuming foods that have no cholesterol. Cholesterol only exists in meat, fish, poultry and other animal-derived products such as dairy and eggs.
As humans, our bodies make all the cholesterol we need, so when we add to it by consuming the wrong foods, that's where we get into trouble.
I hope that helps.
