QuestionDoes having carbonated beverages effect a person after gastric bypass surgery? How does it effect a person. I have heard some strange things, and would like to get some real answers?
Thank You,
Marilyn
AnswerMarilyn,
Depending on carbonated drink type, the adverse health effects can be described as the following:
1) Overeating of other foods occurs in habitual soft drinkers even when there's artificial sweetener (see below) are used instead of sugar. A direct connection was found between the amount of soft drinks per day and obesity risks.
2) Statistics showed that teenage girls regularly drinking sodas have increased risks of bone fractures and teeth problems due to the loss of calcium caused by increase phosphorus (a common ingredient in soda) intake.
3) Carbonated drinks may cause an increased cancer risk. Statistically, a nationwide increase of soda consumption correlates with a growth of esophageal cancer incidence due to excessive stomach distention and acidity leading to permanent gastric reflux -- a serious risk factor for adenocarcinoma development.
4) A soft drinks' common additive, E211, a.k.a sodium benzoate can lead to cirrhosis of the liver, neuro-degenerative diseases such as Parkinson's, and hyperactivity in children.
5) Sodium benzoate occurs naturally in berries, but when large amount of it is mixed with the vitamin C in soft drinks, it produces benzene, a carcinogenic substance that is damaging to the cell's "power station" in mitochondria. The mitochondrial damage leads to a plethora of neuro-degenerative diseases such as the above-mentioned Parkinson's but also epilepsy, Alzheimer's, and ADHD.
