QuestionHello Nevil,
My mother who is 65yrs old had a hernia surgery couple of months back and due to some minor complications they had to draw a lot of blood from her everyday for testing, etc.
She had always been friar and a weak person and this surgery has made her even weaker and is now almost white with all the blood loss.
She also has high blood pressure and thyroid problems for which she takes medications daily and also has painful joints.
I have bought for her a bottle of high potency liquid Calcium and also liquid multi-vitamins which she is taking regularly.
But I want to give her natural foods that are good in producing (the lost) blood for her, foods that give her strength and energy and foods rich in natural calcium and at the same time not giving her fats or cholesterol.
So can you please suggest me foods that I can either buy or prepare for her on a daily basis?
What are the good fruits or vegetables that she should have daily?
How are almonds and other dry fruits ground into powder, so she can drink with milk? Dairy products? Any juices, oils (fish oil), or iron tablets I can buy in stores?
Please do let me know. I would appreciate any help and information.
Thank you so much.
S.
Answer
core nutrition
Hi S.
I can empathise with you as my mother went through similar circumstances in her final years...the difference being that she didn't believe anything she ate or drank would do her any good.
It is absolutely true that the body will do the best it can as long as it receives the best nutrition possible.
It is not about just calcium or just one nutrient- it is about the correct balance so all the minerals, vitamins etc can work at their best.
To that end, any organic fresh meat, chicken, fish, eggs, veg and fruit should form the basis of the daily intake. I would avoid milk and wheat as they are energy drainers. Instead you can use soy milk. Fresh juice is OK as long as you don't have more than a couple of glasses a day- too much acidity otherwise and this may cancel out the calcium effects.
Green leafy veg is great for calcium.
You can actually get almond milk or you can make your own.
definitely fish oil- but make sure you get very high quality in this and any supplements otherwise you are just wasting money.
The simplest way to get the nutrition into your mum is a shake. When nutrition is blended it is much easier to digest and get into the blood stream quickly.
Feel free to have a look at mine below and ask me any questions you have on it. I can also send you some stories from other people.
Thanks and best wishes.
