QuestionI was told by a friend of mine that his doctor told him that the caffeine in diet drinks (Diet Mt.Dew my fav) makes it very hard to break down fat cells. I plan to eat better and drink less of these as one of my first ever resolutions this year. I do drink to many diet dews and didn't think they were hurting me weight wise. Any info on this would be great.....Thanks Mike
AnswerThe theory here is that caffeine creates an insulin response and that your body does not burn fat when unused insulin is present. There is a lot of controversy about that theory, but I know that the insulin response caused by caffeine will cause you to crave sugar- your body has to do something with all that insulin!
The other issue with no calorie sweeteners is the fact that there is no proof that they actually spur weight loss. There are some studies that show that drinking diet sodas actually cause weight gain.
