I understand that refined sugar can increase my chances of getting cancer. I have had a sweet tooth all my life. I have to have something sweet at least twice a day. I have tried sustituting refined sugar for fresh fruits; that does not work. What is frustrating is that for dinner, I eat either baked chicken, ground turkey, or salmon with veggies and white rice or baked white potato everyday; I also eat my fruit and drink my water. But I feel unhealthy eating sweets so often.
1.) Are there any safe sugar substitutes (sweet products) available in the market?
2.) How do I say no to sweets?
3.) I eating white rice or white potatoes everyday, o.k.?
Unfortunately, I get bad reactions when I eat wheat products. If not, what should I eat in lieu of them. Thank you
AnswerYour best bet is to try to slowly wean yourself off the "hard stuff". I personally had a chocolate problem- I would crave chocolate and eat tons of the the stuff, so instead of going cold turkey I just went a little darker- I started with the 55% cocoa then to 60%, then 70%. Now the milk chocolate is too sweet! A bar of 70% dark chocolate has 7 grams of sugar in it, so I don't feel bad at all about it!
You can also try Agave syrup and Barley malt. They are natural, safe and have more flavor than plain old sugar!
Don't say no to sweets!, That will only set you up for feeling deprived! Just set a limit and stick to it. I will have one small slice of pie- cut the piece- EAT IT AND ENJOY IT (don't spend the whole time you are eating it thinking about the rest of the pie that you are NOT having), then move on.
Try eating brown rice and sweet potatoes. You might find that your sugar cravings may be your body calling out for the minerals found in sweet veggies. Sweet potatoes and winter squash (butternut, acorn, turban,and spaghetti squash) are full of natural sugars and minerals, which fruits don't have in large amounts- which could be why the fruit isn't cutting it for your cravings!
