eating to maintain or increase metabolism

Question
I am 36 years old and weigh 16 stone 2 pounds. I have been heavier. My weight has yo yo'd since my teens (i have never been a slim girl)but I am determined to shift the pounds so I have joined a slimming World class I keep a weekly food diary to keep track of what I'm eating. However,I have an underactive thyroid, polycystic ovaries and weightloss is incredibly slow. My typical day consists of yoghurt and fruit for breakfast or occasionally porridge, more fruit or low fat crackers & cheese mid morning, Salad & usually tuna or chicken for lunch (lots of tomatoes beetroot and pepper with a little balsamic vinegar or low fat dressing) another yoghurt or fruit around 4pm then a dinner of baked potato with steamed veg and fish or chicken, or a homemade stew, soup or hotpot. in the evening i may have a piece of toast or some more fruit if I am hungry. I do indulge occasionally, I don't drink much maybe the odd glass of red wine but only at weekends. I go to a curves fitness class when I can. It has taken me from January 9th to lose 7 & a half pounds. As you can see I try to eat little and often with as much fresh fruit and veg as possible. I would appreciate any advice you can give me on foods or exercises that will boost my metabolism and weightloss. I am beginning to lose hope. Thank you for your time.

Answer
With PCOS and Hypothyroidism, you should probably be on a low carb diet- Now I don't say this easily, generally I'm not a fan of the low carb plan (basically because I don't like any food group to be discriminated against :) )  But for some people meat doesn't work- for others carbs are not their friends! You might be in the latter category.

Try cutting down on the carbs (lose the fruit, keep the veg, switch to plain yoghurt, lose the bread) Keep up the exercise, it will make a world of difference. Try it for about 6 weeks and see how you feel, if you don't like it, forget it- but you may find that that is what is right for your body.

Hope this helps,
Lela Simon
