Diet drinks and insulin sensitivity

Question
I read one of your answers regarding artificial sweetners and belly fat. I am not obese, I weigh about 185 and am 5'11. I do have a large belly. I drink a LOT of diet drinks every day. You pointed to a couple of articles that said consumption of artificial sweetners caused release of additional insulin leading to hunger and weight gain. I think I don't need to worry about artificial sweetners because my body doesn't EVER produce insulin (Type 1 for 51 years). What do you think? BTW I consume 1600-1800 calories/day and have never noticed hunger after drinking my diet sodas.

Answer
Steve,

The very fact of belly fat seems to mean a risk of metabolic syndrome so in your case, artificial sweeteners may mean a decrease in insulin sensitivity - your own or administer insulin, doesn't matter.

Hunger is not the only consequence, your body might be "thinking" it consumed more calories than actually happens and if you don't compensate the fake calories by eating more real ones, the body cajole you into less physically active mode, which is very hard to mentally detect -- but the body will do everything to restore the actual calorie balance so you eat your 1600-1800 Cal/day (which is not a fact: the studies show  that 90 percent of dieters undercalculate) but you spend less than  you probably would without the sweeteners. What do you think :) ?
