QuestionI am 15, 5'3" and weigh 130 pounds I eat about 1300 calories a day. I have lost weight( about 25 pounds in a year and a half)eating this much but I am now more worried about just maintaining my weight and being healthy. Am I eating enough? I typically run a mile a day or swim laps for 45 minutes. As i said I want to maintain and not gain any weight back. Thank You!
AnswerDear Elizabeth, It's very hard to get your recommended amount of nutrients eating only 1300 calories per day, plus I'm surprised you are not still losing weight eating that small amount of calories. An average 15 year old would need 1800-2200 to maintain weight. That's average, there are no exact numbers because everybody has a different body type, muscle mass, activity level and metabolism. Do trial and error, if you are losing weight at 1300 per day, add 250 calories per day till your not losing weight anymore. If you gain weight, go back on your eating plan till you reach your goal weight. You are still growing and maturing, so your final healthy weight is still unknown.
Make sure your current diet consists of healthy foods that contains foods from all the food groups especially the meat and protein group. Take a multivitamin to ensure that your nutrient needs are being filled. Hope that helps. Laura Kraemer,Slimkids.com
