thin but frustrated

Question
Hi Im 18 and weigh about 118-120 pounds and am 5'5.  I have always been thin and a very athletic but recently I have been gaining weight only on my hips.  I have a short torso (and long legs) so its really apparent how wide my hips are getting.  I just want to lose about an inch around my hips but i dont know the best way to do that.  Is diet and/or exercise the best way to trim my hips? I recently got a 2 day flu and dropped about 3-4 pounds and noticed my hips trimmed down but i know that once im healthy again they will fill out again.  What can I do?

Answer
Mary,
First the bad news, there is no such thing as spot reduction. Your body decides where it will gain and lose weight and no particular exercise, food or supplement will remove fat from a particular place.

The good news is, you lost weight in your hips- which means that is probably where you will lose it when you start doing it for real. The best way is to exercise and watch your calorie intake. a well balanced exercise routine with cardio and weight training plus a well balanced diet will put you just where you want to be.

Hope this Helps,
Lela Simon
