QuestionMy BP was very high(170/100) and only after taking medicines it has now come down to 110/70. I have even cut down sharply on red meat and fatty food.
Would you kindly advise me on diets to reduce BP and also Cholesterol.
AnswerHi Jamil,
I cannot give you any specific advice to lower your own blood pressure and cholesterol, because I have no knowledge of your personal conditions: there are many reasons for high blood pressure, different types of cholesterol (including HDL and LDL), and any dietitian needs a physician's order to prescribe a specific diet.
But, in general, lowering salt intake helps some people lower their blood pressure. There is also evidence that eating higher potassium foods help in many cases. There is a diet called the DASH diet (dietary approaches to stop hypertension) that has lots of good information (http://www.DASHdiet.org).
To lower cholesterol (if your bad--LDL--cholesterol is elevated), reducing your intake of saturated fats (which are found in most animal products, such as red meat, whole milk, and cheese made with whole milk) and increasing your intake of soluble fibers (like oatmeal) helps decrease blood cholesterol levels in many cases.
