Clarification about the 2lbs a week rule...

Question
Hello there. I'm hoping you can help clarify some things. I myself am 27, 5' 8" and 194 lbs. I've done a lot of reading online and everything I've read says the healthy recommended weight loss is no more than 2lbs a week.

Well I started a small weight loss thread in a forum on a game site called www.gaiaonline.com to go along with the sites new event Camp Chaos (there were different camp groups and one was camp fitness).

I posted my situation and tips that I've learned along the way (seen here:    http://www.gaiaonline.com/forum/fitness-camp-bunkhouse/fc-weight-loss-challenge-...  )  but now I've had a couple people in the tread say that my 2lbs a week info is wrong and that it would depend upon the indiviuals weight.

So I was hoping you could provide some insite on this topic.

Thank you for your time,
Joanna

I'm also going to be asking the same thing of a couple other experts on this site just to see how answers vary from one background to another. I hope that's not too awkward.

Answer
Joanna,
The "other" rule is 10 % of your body weight in 3 months. For you that would be 20 lbs in 12 weeks, which is a little less than 2 lbs per week, but for a person that is 400 pounds it works out to be a little more (3.3 lbs \week). 2 lbs is just a safe number between the two that covers most people.

Hope that explains it,
Lela Simon
