QuestionI HAD MY GALLBLADDER REMOVED ABOUT 15 YEARS AGO AND HAVE BEEN GAINING WEIGHT EVER SINCE. WHAT IS A GOOD DIET FOR SOMEONE LIKE THIS. SHOULD I ALSO BE TAKING SUPPLEMENTS LIKE DIGESTIVE ENZYMES OR BILE ACID SALTS?
THANKS
AnswerDear Erin,
I have heard of this phenomenon before, but doctors have no explanation, other than that prior to the surgery you were experiencing a level of discomfort when you ate that prevented you from eating much. Does this sound true?
Also, as we tend to gain weight after a certain age (maybe late 20's for some, early 40's for others) it could be that you just happen to be gaining weight and it has nothing to do with the gall bladder removal.
Bile salts are helpful for the first few weeks after your gall bladder is removed, along with a recommended low fat diet. After a while, your body adjusts and now bile is released continuously from your liver where it is manufactured. The gall bladder merely stores bile and releases a larger amount at one time when a fatty meal is eaten.
Probably the only thing you need to be doing is finding a way to eat less (smaller portions, lower calorie foods, etc) and become more active to burn calories. If it took you 15 years to gain this weight you can certainly get most of it off sooner than that!
