QuestionI have always struggled with my weight, but have seen it creep up and up over the last decade. Sitting at a desk for eight hours and having a baby have taken its toll. Now, at 41 years of age, I am now 230lbs on a 5' 9" frame. I am becoming a registered nurse and want to be fit for a physically demanding job.
I have begun an exercise routine three times a week that usually involves either weight training or a class (pilates or step aerobics) and then 20 minutes on an elliptical trainer and then 20 minutes on a treadmill at 3.5mph.
I have also begun an online food journal that suggests I limit my diet to 1720 kcal daily. I log every thing I eat.
After 5 weeks of this activity, I have not lost a single pound. I am so depressed about it. I have wild weight fluctuations on the scale that can vary as much as 4 lbs (up and down) from one morning to the next, but it always settles back down to the same weight I have been at. I have never been a good water drinker but I try to drink 2 liters a day. My cholesterol has always been extremely low (in the 80/90s for total cholesterol) and I may have a fatty liver.
I don't know if I am being impatient, but I feel like I should have seen at least some kind of return for my efforts by now. I would appreciate any advice you can give me.
AnswerHi Michele,
The inner manager has no windows in her office, has no idea that there is plenty of food around, only that all of a sudden a lot less is coming in. Your metabolism dives. The older you get, the worse this gets when you go on and off diets. Ya gotta get on a life plan, that you don't go off.
