protein quantity

Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I would like to know how many grams of protein are required per day.
I work out reqularly (4days work out/one day rest/4days work out ...) the work outs are all independent so that i don't over train.
But it is really confusing with all the rumors on the needed quantity of protein, and on the time periods to consume them(directly before or after or during workout).
I guess that protein from different sources have different characteristics among which is the absorption rate, so is there an optimum combination between these different types.
I would also like to know what you think about a low fat diet.
Thank you for your time.
Best
Sam

QUESTION: oh well I was trying to know the general relation like how many grams of proteins per pounds or grams of body weight. But for my case I am 180cm. 73Kg. I am trying to add up about 7kg (lean if possible).
please don't forget to tell me about what you think about a low fat diet (below the average recommended percentages).
Thank you for your reply.

Answer
Sam,
The info is important because there are different recommendations for different age groups and goals.

Generally I would recommend 1.75 grams /kilo protein for you. A low fat diet depends on your age- under 21 it isn't a good idea- you still are developing and coming into complete maturity and being on an extremely low fat diet can hinder that. Over age 21 you could go as low as 20% of daily intake, but I would supplement with 1 gram/day of fish oil, to get your essential fatty acids.

Hope that helps,
Lela Simon
