QuestionHello,
Thank you for volunteering, I am interested in the Asian diet and do believe we eat too much meat and dairy in Western culture.
I would please like to know, if you are able to tell me how can you make sure you are getting enough calcium in a zero dairy diet? (Or just tell me how many servings of vegetables known to have calcium Asian people would eat a day)
And also, I'm very curious about what Asian people would eat for breakfast? This is just for some ideas since I recently cut dairy out of my diet.
Thank you very much,
Kristina
AnswerHi Kristina,
Good observation! Meat & dairy are certainly the culprit for the rate of obesity in western countries. However, if you consume non-fat milk & other dairy products, you can still get calcium but not the saturated fat.
Asians get their calcium from seafood, beans and green vegetables. However, just to be on the safe side, I always encourage people (especially ladies) to consume multivitamins.
In China, people eat congee (rice porridge), oat meal, noodle soup, meat or red bean buns for breakfast. In Singapore bread with jam is also quite popular. However, we never use butter with the bread; just bread & jam (that means we don't add an extra 100 calories & 11 g fat to our breakfast).
Best wishes,
