Weight Loss while injured?

Question
Hello,

I am currently recover from an ACL surgery on my left knee. I would like to know is there any way possible I can lose weight eventhough I am not capable of doing cardio?

I am currently going to the gym for upper body and abdominal excercises, and I am trying to watch what I eat.

Thanks!

Greg

Answer
Hi Greg,

While anyone can lose weight as long as their calories out exceed calories in, it depends on your usual routine and how much that has changed in the meantime.

If you were heavy set, ate a lot of calories, and rarely exercised, now that you are cutting back ("watching what you eat"); you can lose weight.

If you were previously a really fit guy who exercised a lot, and now you have to restrict the cardio you had been doing, it's going to be difficult to keep your intake low enough to burn more than you eat.

You can probably realistically strive for maintenance at this time, being more mindful of eating healthy and not splurging your calories on high-fat or high-sugar foods.  Doing upper body exercises can burn a lot of calories, depending on what you do and for how long.
Building your upper body muscle will lead to more active tissue that burns more calories long after you stop your workout.

Good luck!
