QuestionMy father, age 77, has diabetes - injects insulin five times per day. Lately, he has been feeling dizzy first thing in the morning, and has fallen down frequently as a result. He goes to numerous doctors (endocrinologist, neurologist, cardiologist), and has had numerous tests and scans done--nobody has any ideas?
Do you have any suggestions? My idea was that he should eat and have some water to drink in bed before getting up, and then stand for a few minutes to get the blood circulatin?
Many, many thanks!!!!
AnswerYour idea is not a bad one: The suggestion is not likely to cause harm, which is a very important point to make when asking people for advice over the internet!
It sounds quite odd to me that from all his doctors no one has any ideas ...
I would think someone would put him in the hospital for observation to see what his blood sugar and blood pressure are in the morning. There are many people who experience a low glucose level in the morning, as well as those who drop their blood pressure when they stand up. If his problem is occuring in the morning when he first gets up, then that's when the doctors should be trying to diagnose the problem!
Does your father live alone? Has he ever checked his blood sugar before he gets out of bed to see if it is low at that time? This would be some pretty relevant information to bring to the endocrinologist.
