QuestionI need to increase my iron intake, and am happy to eat more red meats. However I have never been a fan of veg, don't mind them in a nice cheesy bake. After looking through a couple of website for advice most sites say not to eat calcium at the same time as iron. So by eating cheese with my veg, will I not be getting the iron I need. Or what about having milk on my fortified cereal, is that bad as well?
AnswerDear Stacey,
The recommendation is not to take iron and calcium "supplements" at the same time. Calcium and iron in foods is not in the same form. People eat mixed diets all of the time, and having milk on your fortified cereal will give you both the minerals your body needs!
If you do need to increase your iron intake for a particular reason you may consider a supplement such as a one-a-day plus iron. Of course, check with your doctor first.
