Questioncan you point me to a good website that will tell me about:-
how long before certain foods are available as enery by muscles from the point of eating them?
or could you give me the google words to find a good site?
AnswerDear Tony,
I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for, but I have a feeling it doesn't exist.
Energy for the muscles is supplied by muscle glycogen. This is the muscle's storage form of carbohydrates. It's available for quick release, such as running to catch a bus. The glycogen breaks down and yields glucose molecules which can enter the cells, run through the Krebs cycle, and provide the energy needed for exercise on the spot.
You may have heard of carbohdrate loading. This is when athletes eat lots of carbohydrate a day before an event so their muscles are nice and full of glycogen.
It's not exactly like eating a specific food, or even any carbohydrate food, will guarantee a direct trip to muscle glycogen. The body decides where the sugar is needed first; it may be in the blood to increase blood sugar levels, it may be in the liver to store liver glycogen for energy between meals, or the body may have enough circulating glucose and any more eaten will be modified to be stored as fat for long term energy.
I hope that answers some of your question.
I googled "foods to yield muscle glycogen" and was met with more detailed explanations of basicall what I've written above.
