QuestionHello, when I was growing up as a child I would eat a lot of sardines. I stopped eating them in my teenage years. I am going to start eating them again for the omeaga 3s. What I am concerned about is a sardine hasn't been cleaned as traditional fish is and I have never heard anybody give a answer to the question of if a person comusmes a sardine you would be eating the waste left in the fish. It doesn't sound healthy to me ! Should I be concerned with this ?
Thank You.
AnswerThank you for contacting allexperts.com I hope that I can assist you with your questions.
Sardines are very small fish that live on plankton, which is a very small (almost microscopic) combination of plant, animal, and bacteria that lives in the ocean. During the process of being caught and packaged, the sardines will naturally "release" much of the waste product that is in their system and it will be washed away during processing. Any remaining waste will be heated during the canning process and will kill any offending bacteria or germs that may be present rendering them harmless.
If any waste remains in the fish, which is unlikely, it would be harmless to consume. Certainly, sardines have been eaten for many years without any incident of causing illness. I think that you can rest assured that you will not experience any ill effects from eating them.
Best of luck.
