QuestionHi Ms. Kraemer,
Im a college swimmer. Im extremely athletic but I struggle with my weight It slows me down in the water and i am not pleased with the way i look. I am 5'5'' and 175 pounds however my body fat % was 24 last time i had it checked.Thats not too bad but it seems like everything I try to do to slim down doesn't work. At the height of my season I was swimming 4 hours a day with weight training in between and never got below 170. Maybe I cant find a happy medium between too few and too many calories. I gain weight very easily. I have looked for help online but nothing really caters to my situation. Do you have any suggestions.
Thank you so much for your time.
Meghan
AnswerDear Meghan, If you are one of those people that finds it hard to lose weight despite all the exercise, then try a low carb diet like Atkins or South Beach. Low carb diets work because they force the body to burn fat for energy. The body would prefer to burn carbs for it's energy source and if eaten in excess, the carbs would then be easily stored as fat. When carbs are limited in the diet, the body burns fat for it's energy. Limit foods like bread, bagels, fruit juices, sugar drinks, pizza, cookies, crackers, sugar cereal, pasta, rice, mac and cheese, and any other simple carb foods. Instead try to eat a diet higher in protein, fiber, and healthy fats. Eggs, tuna, lean meat, chicken, pork, tofu, whole fruit, vegetables, salads with olive oil dressings, nuts, whole grain breads, low fat dairy are examples of what you should eat. Try to stay around 1500 calories per day. Hope that helps, Laura Kraemer,Slimkids.com
