QuestionHi,
I was wondering if this diet would be good for bulking up with weight training.
Breakfast (7:00 am): 2 natural peanut butter toasts ( whole wheat bread)
1 banana
1 and a half cups of oatmeal (plain, in water)
Snack 1 (10:00 am): 1 and a half cups of oatmeal (plain, in water)
1 apple
1/4 cup of natural almonds
1/4 cup of 1% cottage cheese
Lunch (1:00 pm): 2-3 servings of vegetables
1 can of low sodium tuna
1 slice of whole wheat bread
Snack 2 (4:00 pm): 1 and half cups of oatmeal (plain, in water)
1 apple
1/4 cup of natural almonds
1/4 cup of 1% cottage cheese
Dinner (7:00 pm): 2-3 servings of vegetables
1 can of low sodium tuna or salmon
Snack 3 (10:00 pm, before bed) 1 casein protein shake (in water)
Sometimes I'll switch the tuna for 2 whole eggs plus 4 egg whites, cooked in olive oil, with 1 piece of whole wheat bread and 1/4 cup of 1% cottage cheese. And as I gain weight should I eat progressively more?
Thank you very much.
AnswerIt seems like a fairly healthy diet and is about 2300 calories and 100 gm protein....so it depends on your individual calorie needs. I think most guys working out would be aiming for more calories and perhaps a bit more protein as well.
I'm wondering if this is just a sample menu or if you plan to eat the same thing every day. I would not suggest eating the same thing every day. I would definitely suggest, for instance, having a "fruit" 3 times a day and not an apple--make it an orange at one meal, pineapple another, a peach the next day, etc.
Also, why so much oatmeal? Again, you can replace this with 1-1/2 cups of rice or pasta or a sweet potato to give some more variety. Switch cottage cheese for yogurt or string cheese, and almonds for a different nut!
Dinner... a can of tuna .... hmmm, this means no social life .... Why not live a little? Let yourself have some chicken or lean beef or pork and a vegetable and a cup of starch (mashed potatoes? cous cous? rice pilaf?) If you are aiming for a high calorie bulking diet you are going to need some fat calories in there, and I don't see much of that.
Yes, I see a mention of olive oil and nuts, but it seems like you are aiming for a very restrictive fat diet without a need for that.
Just a cursory review---I would like to see more variety and more carbs and more fat!
