QuestionI am 17 years old. In the past I have struggled with eating problems, mainly binge eating. I am around 5ft 6 and around 136 pounds so I am not overweight I have decided that I want to improve my relationship with food and start eating healthy. I have registered on a website called Fitday in which I can enter everything I eat every day and it gives me nutritional information on it. I have been eating around 1200 calories a day, and try to go for at least 25 grams of fiber and at least 30 grams of protein, I try to keep my fat intake under 30 grams per day and my sodium intake under 1500 mg. I have been doing this for the past two weeks and I am feeling great! I make sure to eat plenty of fruits, veggies and start off nearly every morning with oatmeal. I am quite unclear about my carb intake however. I do not eat white bread or flour or anything like that and most of my carbs come from fruit, nuts, milk and oatmeal however nearly every day I eat over 160 grams of carbohydrates. Nearly all the online sites I read say that this is too much but how can I make it less? I find it pretty difficult to snack on vegetables and prefer fruit. So what do you think is a good amount of carbs per day? Also, are my other nutritional goals good? I really want to make sure that I am doing things right.
Thank you and have a great day
AnswerDear Natalya,
As you probably know at this point, your carbohydrate intake is not the problem. You still seem to be struggling with an eating disorder. The fact that you state you are not overweight, yet try to follow a 1200 calorie diet is very conflicting. It seems you are consumed with counting calories, grams of protein and fat, foods to eliminate and foods to provide fiber....it is still an obsession in your life. I urge you to find a counselor you can trust and start really working on that great relationship with food and eating. It may be healthy food you are eating, but it's not a healthy diet, or a healthy relationship you have yet. Treatment with a therapist who specializes in eating disorders would be the best thing you can do for yourself to lead a long and happy life :)
