QuestionWhile I am not overweight (5'7 150lbs) I do have an upcoming oral surgery to help tret a congenital problem. As a result I have started to change my diet and have started to eat more raw foods and try to cut back on soda. I have started to eat raw broccoli 5-7 times per week and have had no problem with this, as is the same with any fruits I eat. However wice tafter eating a salad made with romaine lettuce I got horrible cramping and bloating. I was wondering if this will pass, as my body gets use to breaking down raw food, or if it will be an ongoing issue, and if so what vegeables could you reccomend as it seems broccoli is the one raw veggie I eat. (I eat other things, as I want to ease into a 30-50% raw diet)
AnswerHi Luke,
Whatever vegetables you like are a good idea to eat! Broccoli is an excellent choice, but you could be missing out on certain nutrients by not having a variety of veggies in your diet. Consider carrots, cauliflower, celery, cucumber, peppers, mushrooms, squash, green beans, pea pods, and spinach leaves.
If there is some reaction in your body to romaine lettuce, I cannot explain what that is, but I would just avoid it. Was there anything else on the salad that could have caused stomach upset? Was the lettuce washed well? It could have been a mild case of food poisoning from something on the lettuce. I would suggest trying another batch of romaine in another week or so.
You might also need to keep your portions smaller until your body adjusts to this higher fiber intake.
