QuestionI am really trying to lose weight by not eating as much. I haven't had time to get to the gym in many weeks now, but have started outdoor jogging on some nights and Wii Fit activities. My main concern is losing muscle. I know the body burns muscle as easy fuel when the body is starving. I don't know how to tell if I'm "starving" or just a hungry. Would I have to not eat for like a whole day before my body starts eating muscle or something? I just try to eat cereal in the morning, maybe a nutrigrain bar, a very light lunch, and a light dinner just to keep things super simple.
AnswerDear James,
As long as you are taking in enough protein and being active, your body will not start losing muscle.
I do not know your height or weight, but about 75 gm protein should be ample (about 1/2 gram protein per pound of ideal body weight).... check the food labels of what you are eating to see how much you are getting. Each ounce of meat provides 7 gm protein. (So if you are having milk on your cereal in the morning, a few oz. of protein at lunch and a few more oz. at dinner, you're easily taking in nearly 60 gm). You may consider a healthy protein snack such as a yogurt or some string cheese just to get in another few grams.
