QuestionHi there..
Which burns more calories, jogging or walking? Assuming the following:
1. The distance is constant
2. Based on a particular individual, not relative to someone else.
Thanks!
AnswerOsman,
Sports physiologists talk about this issue in terms of energy cost of exercise, but keeping in mind that the higher the cost, the more calories are burnt, you can apply it to your question.
The same person's cost of running increases with the speed (velocity) linearly, for example, at 8 km/h, the cost is consumption of around 25 ml O2 per 1 kg body weight in one minute and at 16 km/h, it's 45 ml O2 per 1 kg body weight, etc. Not so with walking, energy cost of which is non-linear: at 4 km/h it's 10 ml O2 per 1 kg, at 8 it approaches the cost of running but with further speed increase, it becomes increasingly more and more costly than running at the same speed.
Hope it helps,
