QuestionHello Richard:
I am a 41-year male, 6'2". In the last 4 - 4.5 months I have gone from 420 pounds to 340 pounds. This was done strictly through diet and exercise. No pills, no surgery. Although obviously big and heavy, I have always weighed more than I "look". I have no other health issues or physical limitations. My preferred choice of exercise is the treadmill.
My question is what is better: going , say, 30 minutes everyday at 3.8 - 4.0 mph OR 60 minutes a day at about 3.0 - 3.2 mph? The 3.8 - 4.0 definitely pushes my heart and legs - not in a bad or dangerous way, just really have push myself to finish, sometimes even slowing it for a minute or so to catch breath. The 60 minutes at 3.0 really drops the sweat and I am tired but not exhausted at the end.
I'm looking strictly at this for weight loss, not necessarily for heart, colesterol, or muscle conditioning. I pretty habitually use the treadmill at least six days a week.

AnswerFirst of all CONGRATULATIONS on your weight loss. That's awesome.
What's best is whatever works FOR YOU. Whatever you enjoy?and keeps you working out.
Personally, I like to mix it up. One day I'll go for a nice long, slow jog. The next day I might do some heavy interval sprints. Keep it different. Keep your body guessing.
Also, make sure you throw some weight training in there too. Hit the irons once or twice a week. Great for fat burning.
