sugars in a smoothie

Question
I make a smoothie which consists of 5 frozen strawberries, 2 whole bananas and a 1 inch slice of fresh pineapple with 1 1/2 cup of distilled water for myself everyday, my question is approximately how much natural sugar is in this smoothie?  I have lost weight with it, but want to know the sugar content b/c my family history is diabetics.  I am 45yrs old and in good general health so far.

Answer
In general if your A1C is good these fruits should not bother you. Fruits are natural sugar and it does not have the same affect on insulin levels for most people as processed sugars. The problem is the pure amount of sugar within these fruits could eventually hurt you. I would cut back on the every day and save it to once or twice a week. You can also try to put only half of one banana and substitute with a lower sugar/carb fruit such as Raspberries, black berries and cranberries.

Banana 35 carbs and 36 sugars each

Strawberries 9 carbs 8 sugars

Pineapple 22 carbs 18 sugars

total carbs for one drink = 101 + 98 =199 sugars

You should not eat more then 40 g a day this drink is more then 4 times that.
Sounds really tasty but may be something you want to slow down on.

Good luck
