Sugar in Childrens Cereal

Question
What is an acceptable sugar level for a children's cereal?  What is wrong with the high level of sugar we see in some children's cereal?

Answer
Hi Tiffani, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Sugar causes a multitude of issues in the body. The most problematic issue is the one that is not talked about much and that is acid. Sugar is an acidic substance and acid in the body will cause major chaos. Over acidifying your body will not only create the exact atmosphere that is perfect for all illnesses (colds, flus, chronic diseases, etc), but it also will dehydrate the body.

Children's cereal is almost always full of sugar and if it's not, it is still a starchy food which breaks down to sugar and is basically acid. The best options are the cheerios type cereals, yet they still have sugar content and the starch is the same. For kids in the morning, get them some fresh fruit, maybe a little protein and stay away from the starchy foods. The sugar influx from starch will give them a high, but they will also experience a crash (most kids feel this in school) while the combination of fruit sugars and some protein will help them sustain their energy through the first part of the day.

I hope that helps a little and if there is anything else I can do, please let me know. I have some great health posts on my blog, feel free to check them out. http://vibrantlifeblog.com

Best of luck!
