QuestionHi Joe
A friend said baking soda is good for heartburn and bloating. Its sodium bicarbonate-just put a half teaspoon full in a drink.
Seems pretty simple and cheap campared to a lot of OTC stuff.
I have a big gassy (not fat) belly in spite of exercising and dieting.
I am worried it might be dangerous though?
Thanks!
AnswerThanks for the question and I am happy to touch on what I know about using baking soda.
Baking soda is a natural antacid, when dissolved in water it can neutralize your stomach acid which is in turn going to relieve your heartburn caused by acid reflux. In addition, when mixed with water baking soda releases carbon dioxide which is why it will fizz. This carbon dioxide will help release the gas and bloating you have by allowing your lower esophageal sphincter to open. This will allow you to burb and release the pressure from the excess gas and hopefully help your bloating.
So far there are not any clinical trials done to prove the success of this use of baking soda, but that is also how most home remedies remain. There are also no dangerous issues that have been reported, but if you are concerned steer clear; however, I would recommend this approach to any and all of my clients and friends.
I am very pleased to receive this question from you about a natural home remedy rather than a typical approach by taking some medication or over the counter antacids. This is a much better approach to gaining optimal health and I applaud your efforts.
I hope that this information helps and thanks for the opportunity to answer your question.
