QuestionGood afternoon,
I have read many places that veggie rolls have 200-300 calories per roll, even the ones with brown rice, avacado, carrotts and cucumbers. I find that hard to believe that a roll so small could have so many calories. When I eat them for lunch, I generally eat a whole 8oz. package which is 12 small rolls. I do not have anything else with it since it is enough to fill me up. I have always thought I was having a pretty healthy lunch when I ate that but since reading how many calories are in one roll, I am not sure I should eat them at all. I have been eating healthy and excercising as part of a lifestyle change reccomended by my doctor and have lost 15 pounds. I still have about 50 more pounds to lose and would like to keep eating the veggie rolls. Are they healthy? Do they really have that many calories per roll? Thank you.
AnswerThe main ingredient in veggie rolls (the veggie alternative to sushi)is the rice, and it is here that the calories lie! There are around 300kcal in 80z cooked rice. If you are buying them then the nutritional composition will be on the packaging. It's not always about the calories as such, for example, 33g fat is equal to around 300kcal, and 43g of carb or protein is also around 300kcal. How your body deals with it is the key. As a lunch, I don't say veggie rolls are unhealthy and I don't think 3-400kcal is unreasonable. Check out http://www.sushifaq.com/sushi-calories.htm for more information.
