QuestionDear Laura,
I am curious about this product called spectrum spray coconut oil.
My mom heard someone on the radio advocate it for healthier cooking but I'm a bit sketpical.
The reason is...
I have read that coconut oil is high in saturated fats but this product is not hydrogenated and is labeled as "organic".
I was also puzzled as to why this product says zero on the health facts. I'm a bit puzzled by this.
I'm asking cause I like to eat egg whites and I was thinking I may have to boil them instead cause I stay away from fatty oils.
If you could help clarify this I would truly appreciate it.
AnswerCoconut oil is high in saturated fat. It is considered a good type of saturated fat because, like avocado, it is not the same as saturated fat from animal meats. Saturated fats are not always hydrogenated either. That is a manufacturing decision and process. So, a product can have saturated fat and not be hydrogenated. As far as being organic, that is also a manufacturing decision. If the product falls under the requirements of third party certifications for organic products, it can be labeled organic but will be certified organic. There are other requirements that allow a product to be legally labeled organic, such as no pesticides or antibiotics, but are not certified. Nutrition information on the labels is based on serving size and amount of an energy nutrient within that serving size. Because the serving size of spray oil is so small, the amount of the energy nutrients of the product does not have to be labeled. You are getting a small amount of fat, etc. However, it is under the FDA labeling requirements.
