AnswerHi Tony,
That's a tough one...I can appreciate how difficult that must be to want to eat healthy and feel like you have no way of doing so. How old are you? If your family is not permitting you to help with the family cooking or grocery shopping, or buy your own groceries, it becomes less of an issue of nutrition and more about helping your family understand why this is important to you. Are you able to have an open conversation with your family? What are their reasons for only wanting to eat unhealthy foods? For them not allowing you to eat healthier? What would it mean to you if you were able to change your diet?
Food is a very personal thing...and often a very emotional one as well. It can be extremely overwhelming to change one's diet, and it sounds like your family may not be ready to make any drastic changes. If they are open to it, start with small changes...baby steps. Ideally, we would be looking at fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, some good quality animal products....this is likely too much for right now. How about frozen veggies? brown bread instead of white? Carrot sticks instead of chips? For yourself, I would certainly recommend drinking water instead of sodas whenever possible. Honestly, there's not really much to work with in the foods that you listed....Hopefully, though, if your family is able to understand the benefits of switching to a healthier diet, and why it is so important to you, they will be more open to making changes. I hope this is helpful.
Best of luck,
Melissa
