QuestionI'm currently 18 and I've been trying to find ways to get lean, but still gain mass muscle. Now I train with a friend named Nate and hes on this thing called a low carb diet. Hes a model and he likes to get and stay lean. Now he said I don't need more than 100 grams of carbs a day. And any more than that won't help me loose weight. And he also said that eating 100 grams of carbs won't hinder or slow down my mass muscle gaining. Is this true?
I weigh 208 lbs and I consume between 120-150 grams of carbs a day. And I also consume a little bit more than 250 grams of protein a day and around 2,700-3,000 calories a day. And The highest carb meal I have is oatmeal and thats before my workouts. The rest of the day its just mainly high protein, low carb meals. And I do about 20 mins of slow-moderate cardio about 3-4 times a week after my workouts.
So if I want to get lean but still gain muscle mass should I listen to him or just stick with my plan I have going now?
AnswerIt's VERY difficult to BOTH grow muscle AND cut fat. Most professional body builders do one or the other. They ramp up by eating LOTS of calories, and then 6 to 8 weeks before competition season they start "cutting" to get that shredded, ripped look.
As far as how much you should eat, that's totally up to you. I personally prefer a 40/40/20 ratio of protein/carbs/fats. Figure out the total number of calories you should be eating based on your needs and then divide it up accordingly. Then add tons of green vegetables and a reasonable amount of fruit, and you're all set.
