QuestionDear Lawrence,
I have recently purchased details of a low calorie eating plan, that is based on eating 1200 calories per day. However, the plan says to eat 1000 calories a day for the first 2 weeks to 'kick start' weight loss. I'm worried about this as, if my metabolism drops down to 1000, when I start eating 1200 won't I put on weight?
Do you know if eating 1000 calories then switching to 1200 will cause me to put on weight or if I'd continue to lose?
Thankyou for your time, I look forward to your reply
Kind regards
Jackie

Metabolic rate is controlled by many factors, one of which is quantity of food. The trick to a low calorie diet is eating multiple times a day but in small portions that will still keep your metabolism working, this is because it remains actively burning the food you have just ate until the next time you eat. As for switching from 1000 to 1200 calories, I would not be concerned so much. You will see that as you lose weight you will have peaks and valley's where your body is telling you that it requires different types of nutrients in order to continue to take off the weight. Plateaus where you will not lose weight for a few days are common when dieting. These plateaus are because of an imbalance within the nutrition you are taking in. The 1000 to 1200 change is probably put in the diet where it is to help avoid the plateau affect. Good luck with you diet.
