QuestionI am an active woman who weight trains. Many articles I read pertaining to bodybuilding recommended taking extra vitamins such as calcium and iron in addition to a multi-vitamin. My question is, if a multi-vitamin provide 100% of one's daily needs in these areas, why should one take additional vitamins? If someone is taking a multivitamin, is there any additional benefit to taking additional vitamins that are already provided within the multi-vitamin?
AnswerThe "daily requirements" for a multivitamin are calculated for "normal" people with typical lifestyles. If you're weight training, you may want to take additional supplements like calcium and iron because muscle-building may leech these minerals from your bones.
HOWEVER, I'm not a physician, so you may want to consult yours before taking my advice. This is just what I've read in various books/magazine articles.
