QuestionHi Laurie,
We have a little discussion about lettuce. My wife likes the real green leafy salads, like romaine etc. I like that also, but alot of times I'd rather have iceberg lettuce on/with particular meals. She scolds me for eating 'empty calories', as she says iceberg lettuce is not really good for you. I figure eating empty calories is better than filling that same slot with fatty foods. So my question is, is it really that much of a difference eating iceberg lettuce over leafy green lettuce? Should I forget the iceberg and eat solely the greener lettuce?
Thank you,
Mike
AnswerHi Mike,
You can't really call iceberg lettuce "empty calories" because it doesn't have calories to speak of!
Yes, the darker green varieties have more nutrition. But there isn't a thing wrong with enjoying a bowl full of iceberg lettuce unless you're also having a bowl of salad dressing along with it!
