QuestionI was told by an ex that eating potatoes all the time is loading up on carbs that turn into sugar in the body....what does that mean and why is it bad? and why cant I eat potatoes all the time as a regular diet if thats all I can afford? a ten pound bag is cheap...$2.50 for spuds $5.00 for whites or reds.
they are boiled and sauce added. baked. etc.
and are the skins good or bad?
would it make a difference if I added a small amount of chicken or beef to each potatoe dish?
AnswerHello Peter,
Yes, potatoes and other starch-containing foods (like rice, pasta, bread and cereals) are full of carbs! That's not a bad thing. The carbs do turn to sugar and this is what your body runs off--its source of energy.
There's not a thing wrong with consuming potatoes as part of your regular diet (excepting people on special medical diets who must reduce intake of certain minerals, such as people with kidney failure).
The skins are a good source of fiber and also the minerals, like potassium, are in higher concentrations in the skin.
Adding chicken or beef will give you an added source of protein, which is essential for your immune system, organs, and muscles!
Here is a story about the Executive Director of the Washington State Potato Commission who, in an effort to raise awareness of the health values of potatoes, ate nothing but potatoes for 2 whole months!
