running and diet to lose weight

Question
Hi, I am 173 cms (5.69 feet) tall , 23 yr old girl, weigh 72kg (158.4lbs ), lacto ovo vegetarian (vegetarian but I have diary and eggs) I was 65 kgs ( 143 lbs) two months ago and gained all this with a daily dosage of dessert and cakes :( I was tryign to learn to bake!

anyway, i have begun running to loose weight . I get upper abdominal pain , on the right side, if I run to much. Technically I only walk. and do some sprinting. If I run my upper abdomen pains, why is this and how can I train my self to push harder. Also I keep drinking water when I do cardio is that okay.

I notice with an incline but just walking, makes the treadmill show that we ve burned more cals but i don't feel so exhausted (7 incline, speed of 5 or 6) for 20mins but at 0 incline and I am trying to run at 7 or 7.5 i can't do it...I am exhausted in less than a minute.

Is the machine being inaccurate?

The gym instructor says I need to at least work off 500 -600 cals I can max do 300 cals per hour at the gym- by doing 20 mins treadmill, 20 mins elliptical, 10 mins rowing.

How can I work out better to loose more weight. I have already cut down on the sweets /diary and am eating healthy.

Answer
HI Shakti - it sounds like you might be getting stitch which usually comes from doing too much too soon or not breathing properly.  However, I'm not a medical doctor so that is just an opinion and something you'd need to check out.  The first thing to do is to listen to your body - do you need to start off a little more gradually?  Does running even suit you? Is it fun?  Are you enjoying doing it - or could there be an activity that you enjoy more?  I think some of the myths around exericse will help you: http://www.ditch-diets-live-light.com/exercise-information.html

The next thing is to understand how calories burned during exercises translates into changing your basal metabolism - it's not calories that you burn in any single exercise session that you have to be concerned with - it's what you're doing that is changing your basal metabolism.  http://www.ditch-diets-live-light.com/basal-metabolic-rate.html

Lastly remember that weight that comes off slowly is vastly more likely to stay off permanetly.
Kind regards and good luck
