QuestionLaurie
I dont know if I have any food intolerances, but I do get a bad reaction to ice cream. It bloats me up and gives me nausea, especially if eaten in the evening. However, I can eat all other dairy, and drink a big glass of milk no problem. Is this a reaction to the fat or sugar?
Also, fatty foods give me the same problem, especially red meat. On the rare occasion I eat out I pay for it later. I cant find much info on fat intolerance, and I dont have diaharea or constipation or heartburn which would indicate I.B.S.
Thanks for your thoughts!
AnswerHi Marty,
What a bummer to have such symptoms after ice cream.
It might be the sugar and it might be the fat. It's probably got nothing to do with the dairy aspect since you say milk gives you no problem. And since sometimes meat does the same to you, it sounds more like the fat is the problem.
Fat is much more difficult to digest than protein and carbohydrates. It stays in the stomach longer (often keeping us feeling full for longer), and sometimes gives us the feeling, "I shouldn't have eaten that much!"
That being said, consider the amount you're eating. When you have trouble after red meat, is it usually a 12-oz steak, as opposed to a 3-oz burger? Are you having a rather large bowl of ice cream (as most people do!)?
Try measuring out the 1/2-cup serving they suggest on the ice cream container and see if your problems don't lessen significantly.
I would love to hear back if you find a resolution!
