Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease that affects how your body turns food into energy. With type 2 diabetes, your body doesn't make enough insulin or doesn't use insulin well. Glucose, or sugar, builds up in your blood instead of being used for energy.
Anyone can get type 2 diabetes, but some people are at higher risk, including:
* People who are overweight or obese.
* People who have a family history of diabetes.
* People who are physically inactive.
* People who have high blood pressure.
* People who have high cholesterol.
* People who have a history of gestational diabetes.
* Women who have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
* People of certain ethnicities, such as African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, and Asian Americans.
Type 2 diabetes often develops slowly, and you may not have any symptoms at first. As your blood sugar levels get higher, you may start to have symptoms such as:
* Increased thirst
* Frequent urination
* Increased hunger
* Weight loss
* Fatigue
* Blurred vision
* Slow-healing sores
* Tingling or numbness in your hands or feet
Type 2 diabetes can lead to serious complications, including:
* Heart disease
* Stroke
* Kidney disease
* Vision loss
* Hearing loss
* Nerve damage
* Skin problems
* Amputation
There is no sure way to prevent type 2 diabetes, but you can reduce your risk by:
* Eating a healthy diet. Choose whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and lean protein. Limit unhealthy fats, such as saturated and trans fats, and added sugar.
* Getting regular exercise. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week.
* Maintaining a healthy weight.
* Quitting smoking.
* Managing your blood pressure.
* Managing your cholesterol.
* Getting enough sleep.
* Reducing stress.
If you have any of the risk factors for type 2 diabetes, talk to your doctor about ways to reduce your risk.
