How Does Diabetes Affect Your Body?

Diabetes is a chronic disease that affects how your body turns food into energy. With diabetes, your body either doesn't make enough insulin or doesn't use insulin well. Glucose, or sugar, builds up in your blood instead of being used for energy.

Over time, high blood sugar can damage your blood vessels and nerves. This can lead to many serious health problems, including:

Heart disease - Diabetes increases your risk of heart disease and stroke.

Stroke - Diabetes is a major risk factor for stroke.

Kidney disease - Diabetes can damage the kidneys and lead to kidney failure.

Vision loss - High blood sugar can damage the blood vessels in your eyes, leading to vision loss.

Loss of Sensation in Hands n' Feet - You can develop tingling pain , weakness or numbness in hands n' feet (neuropathy). Left untreated the damage could become permanent

Gum Disease - People with diabetes are more likely to develop gum disease, which can lead to tooth loss.

Skin Condition - diabetes also can cause dry ,itchy skin prone to bacterial ,fungal or skin problems that are slow to heal

To prevent or delay these complications, it's important to keep your blood sugar levels under control. This can be done through a combination of medication, healthy eating, and exercise.
