QuestionI am a young female and I need to lose weight. I tend to over eat. I will be full and not hungry at all but make myself eat. What is wrong with me? I think it happens more when I'm bored or happy. I need to stop but don't know how. Could please tell me how to change.
AnswerHi May
Eating when we're happy is often a habitual thing - in other words, a lot of our celbrations have always revolved around food, so when we're happy it feels like we should be eating. You can read more about this at http://www.ditch-diets-live-light.com/emotional-eaters.html
When you're eating for other reasons it usually has to do with trying to fill an inner need with an outer substance. If it's when you're bored, it may be because you don't feel like your life has enough passion, purpose and meaning. In which case it won't help to tackle the eating, you need to look at the underlying cause because you can't fill an intangible hole (and emotion) with a tangible substance (food).
May, here's what I'd suggest you do: Just start a sort of food diary and make a note of any times when you're eating in this way. The three things you need to are note are:
1) what happened before you started eating
2) was there any one person involved
3) what are you feeling
Once you've kept this for a few weeks, look through it and see what patterns stand out for you. Then ask yourself what it is underlying the eating that you need to work at getting over. And if you're stuck feel free to come back to me.
Kind regards Cari
