QuestionQUESTION: what do you think the main causes of obesity are? Do you think that the supermarkets increase the chances of obesity? Why is it that with a celebrity culture of skinniness the rest of the nation is getting bigger?
ANSWER: Hi Natalie, I think there are MANY causes of obese nations and the only part supermarkets play in them is unnatural foods, full of chemicals that upset our hormones, and often have a combination of fats, sugars and salts that are blatantly unhealthy. (see http://www.ditch-diets-live-light.com/food-myths.html)
Having said that though - let's look at America - the fattest nation in the world. We drive cars and take escalators instead of walking or cycling - to see the real impact of that on our metabolism check out (http://www.ditch-diets-live-light.com/basal-metabolic-rate.html). We have more TV channels and watch many more hours of TV than other nations.
We have more 'diet foods' (for more about food myths check out http://www.ditch-diets-live-light.com/diet-foods.html) than any other nation, which is actually a sick joke in many cases. We sleep less than any other nation - (for more on this check out http://www.ditch-diets-live-light.com/sleep-and-obesity.html). I think we vastly underestimate the effects of not getting sufficient sleep on obesity levels.
Were also pretty stressed which means that comfort eating is rife, and stress hormones like cortisol have a major impact on our fat-creating hormones and we don't laugh enough (http://www.ditch-diets-live-light.com/reasons-to-laugh.html).

QUESTION: Hi Carl
As a follow up, How do you think the computer gaming industry has increased
the level of obesity?
AnswerWell that's an interesting one.....I think the 'old style' computer games have played the same role as TV - bad for our obesity. But the new generation computer games like wii show promise because they encourage activity levels instead of just sitting there. Thanks for rating my answer - I'm glad I was able to be of assistance.
